you have to make a common denominator, which would be (a+1)(a-1).

Multiplying each term by wahtever it’s missing you get:

(a-1)(a-1) + (a+1)(a+1)

——————————-

(a+1)(a-1)

There’s no common terms, so you have to just expand and cancel out

a^2 – 2a + 1 + a^2 + 2a + 1

————————————-

(a+1)(a-1)

2a^2 +2 (the 2a’s cancel)

———–

2a^2 – 1

multiply through by common denominator: (a+1)(a-1)

to get: ((a-1)^2+(a+1)^2)/(a+1)(a-1)

(a^2-2a+1+a^2+2a+1)/(a^2-1)= 2(a^2+1)/(a^2-1)
