first, substitute the x and y from the ordered pair into both equations (x is 2 and y is 1). the goal is to see whether BOTH equation are true or not after substituting the numbers.

let’s start with the first one:

2+2*1=4

2+2=4

4=4

the first equation is true after substitution. however, you can’t say it’s the solution of the system yet because we only know it’s true for ONE of the equations.

let’s do the second equation:

3*2-2*1=4

6-2=4

4=4

the second equation is also true. BOTH equations are true, so the ordered pair IS a solurion of the system.

hope that helps! 🙂

x+2y=4

3x-2y=4

*x+2y=4

x= -2y+4

*3x-2y=4

3(-2y+4) – 2y = 4

-6y+12-2y=4

-8y=4-12

-8y= -8

y=1

*x+2y=4

x+2(1)=4

x=4-2

x=2
