Chaucer made a crucial contribution to English literature in using English at a time when much court poetry was still written in Anglo-Norman or Latin.
Before Chaucer, literature had scarcely as yet achieved characterization. His great contribution to literature was to make persons so intense that readers consider them as individuals. His characters, however, didn’t change as more modern characters do. They had their vices or their virtues; they were fixed and their reactions were predictable.
