(a + 8.5) – [(-b) + |c|] Mom in need of help!?
a = 1.5
b = -2
c = -1.7
Favorite Answer
(1.5 +8.5) – [-(-2) + |-1.7|]
The c with these symbols | | is an absolute value sign, which means its the opposite of the number as in it turns from negative to positive. So turn it back.
(1.5+ 8.5)- [-(-2) + 1.7]
Then multiply the – with -2 which turns to a positive.
(1.5+ 8.5)- [ 2 + 1.7]
Then add the parantheses together and then the brackets (because of order of operations to get:
10 – 3.7=
You can figure this out.
Ok well like the other answerer said, just plug in those numbers and solve. The I I around the c, IcI, means “absolute value”. Absolute values are always positive, so in this equation you plug 1.7 in for c instead of -1.7. In an equation that was Ia + bI, you would take 1.5 + -2 = -.5 but b/c of the absolute value the answer would be .5 (you do the absolute value thing last). Using order of operations (remember Please Excuse My Dear Aunt Sally?), you take a + 8.5, so 1.5 + 8.5 = 10, and have -(b) so -(-2), the extra negative makes it positive (remember two negatives make a positive and a positive and negative together make a negative), so 2 + 1.7 (remember absolute value makes it positive 1.7) = 3.7. Then you take the 10 (from the first set of parenthasis) – 3.7 = 6.3 Those brackets [ ] around the secound set of numbers/letters work the same as normal parenthases, they just help you differentiate between the two. ((-b) + IcI) gets kind of confusing.
worked out:
(a + 8.5) – [(-b) + IcI]
(1.5 +8.5) – (2 + 1.7)
10 – 3.7
6.3
((1.5)+8.5) – [(-(-2))+I-1.7I]
= (1.5+8.5) – [2+1.7]
=(10) – 3.7
=6.3
|whatever value| means ABSOLUTE VALUE.
((1.5) + 8.5) – [2 + 1.7]
= 10 – 3.7
= 6.3 – final answer. 🙂
