1401 votes were cast, if 30 voters switched from winner to loser, loser would win by 5, how many votes????????

In a two-candidate election 1401 votes were cast. If 30 voters had switched their votes from the winner to the loser, the loser would have won by 5 votes. How many votes did each candidate actually receive?

Let w be the number of votes the winner received.

Then the loser received 1401 – w.

If 30, voters switched from winner to loser, then the winner would have w – 30 and the loser 1401 – w + 30 = 1431 – w.

Therefore:

1431 – w = w – 30 + 5

1431 – w = w – 25

Adding w to each side:

1431 = 2w – 25

Adding 25 to each side:

1456 = 2w

Dividing by 2:

w = 728.

The winner has 728, and the loser 1401 – 728 = 673.

Check:

After the switch, winner has 728 – 30 = 698, and loser has 703.
