It really depends on the state. In my state, our laws are such that the state has no say in my child’s education as long as I am fulfilling the law (as well it shouldn’t as they are not the parent.)

Now, there is always that chance that if a child is having difficulties, not being properly supervised or out during school hours without reason or a parent/guardian a concerned person might contact DFAC (social services). In that situation the burden of proof is on them to show educational neglect.

Some states require oversight by a teacher or school administrator. Some require an ‘umbrella’ school or group that helps to keep track of documentation.

As most homeschool families are concerned about the education of their children, the state would not have any reason to look over the shoulders of diligent parents. Home schoolers, on average, do better than their public school counterparts. (Yes, there are always exceptions, which is why there is “educational neglect”).

Nope…where I live, homeschooling is protected by the state constitution. The only time the state checks in is if negligence is legitimately suspected, which has happened once in the last 10 years – statewide.

Otherwise, homeschoolers in our state consistently test several percentage points above the classroom kids both in voluntary annual testing (Iowa Basic Skills) and in ACT/SAT/CLEP/AP tests. The state has no reason to check in on us, so they put their efforts elsewhere 🙂 Works for me!

No, but this is our first year. However, I have been told by other homeschoolers here that our state is pretty lenient, and as long as the paperwork is all filed, the state doesn’t usually bother homeschooling families.

No, but our state (Washington) goes pretty easy on homeschoolers. Depending on where you live, it can be relatively easy or insanely hard to homeschool.

Have you heard of the Home School Legal Defense Association? Check them out… we’re members.

No, we notify the County once a year during the school year, and then the state gives the following ruling:

Responsibilities and rights of parent who provides home school.

A parent has the authority to instruct his/her child, stepchild, or ward in a home school and is solely responsible for:

(1) the educational philosophy of the home school.

(2) the selection of instructional materials, curriculum, and textbooks.

(3) the time, place, and method of instruction, and

(4) the evaluation of the home school instruction.

We have some of the best home school laws in the nation, they understand that parents are doing a very good job, and are in no need for further oversight in how they are educating their children.

Over the years the results of home schooling have spoken volumes, and proved to be a viable alternative to conventional schooling.

Where I live in Canada, the province requires that we meet with a certified teacher at least twice a year.

No. I don’t think my school district has enough manpower. I just send in achievement tests in advance. They want these tests at the end of odd numbered grades, but I send them in beforehand.

One fun thing I do is I give my daughter poorly written items from school district employees and I help her correct these items. If anyone ever shows up, I’ll hand them our collection of these items.

Psh. Every day of my life.

What Ive begun to do is I sit on the porch when I see them coming.

Butt Naked.

It usually slows them enough for me to get out my knife and start running.

Damn feds.
