I think everyone was correct but to be more specific you are a veteran, if you (1) have engaged in active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces (Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines, or Coast Guard) or are a National Guard or Reserves

enlistee who was called to active duty for purposes other than training, or were a cadet or midshipman at one of the service academies, and (2) were released under a condition other than dishonorable. Basically you were in the Armed Forces and you are now retired in good standing.

There is another question (question 54) on the FAFSA that does ask if you are currently in the Armed Forces. Your question (question 55) only covers the retired part.

Actually a veteran is one who has been in the military and is now out.

it means have you retired from the military or have you been in the military but are NOT currently in it now.

It is asking if you were ever in the service IE… army, navy, air force. a veteran is someone who was in the service
