took me a while but

3/5= (x-5) / (x+1)

times by (x+1)

3/5(x+1) = x-5

multiply out brackets

3/5x + 3/5 = x-5

plus 5

3/5x + (5+3/5) = x

minus 3/5x

5+3/5 = 2/5timesx

put into decimal form

5.6 = 0.4x

divide by 2

2.8 = 0.2x

times by 5

14 = x

First multiply both sides by 5 (the first denominator) which gives you:

3=5(x-5)/(x+1)

Then multiply both sides times (x+1) which gives you:

3(x+1)=5(x-5)

Multiply out and it gives you:

3x +3 =5x-25

Solve for x

3x=5x-28

-2x=-28

x=14
