Should I bring proof of my medical bills to the financial aid office at my college?

I have many medical bills which have put my family in debt over the years. The FAFSA predicted that my EFC will be $16,552, unfortunately with all of my family’s medical bills, there is no way we can come up with that amount. Today I am visiting the financial aid office at my school, so should I bring proof of my medical bills in order to qualify for financial aid?

I suppose it couldn’t hurt to try, but I’m not certain whether the financial aid office at your school can do anything about it.

The FAFSA asks all of the questions that are technically considered relevant (whether or not there are additional scenarios that should be asked about, such as yours, is another story) to your EFC. I don’t know how much discretion the financial aid office at your school has in overriding that, but if you’re willing to share that personal information I see no reason not to try. If nothing else, perhaps the financial aid officer might be aware of other aid sources for you that would take your situation into consideration???

Ask the financial aid office for a medical expense appeal form. You will need to complete the form and then provide documentation. Don’t take your medical bills to the school with you…the aid office won’t review your appeal unless you provide all documentation, and you won’t know for sure what they want until you get the appeal form.

It used to be that you had to resubmit under special circumstances where the medical bills will be considered. You can always take them, just in case. Sure as you don’t take them, the rules will have changed and you will need them the first meeting.

Good luck to you and hope this helps.

It wouldn’t hurt. Bring whatever documentation you have.
