Many colleges have dorms that are strictly for upperclassmen (juniors, seniors). If yours is like that, no prob.

Or, you can just become “the coolest person in the dorm” because you will be the one who can buy the alcohol!

The dorm is a good transition between home and an apartment of your own. It provides a communal for of living with some semblance of security (depending on the school), a guarantee of heated rooms (some apartments do not provide heat between 11 pm and 5 am when the outside temperature is above 50, depending on the city), and an almost guarantee of immediate repairs. It also allows contact with the other students which helps you fit in. Since dorms have rules, you can always reference them as to why you do not want to do something that another person is pressuring you to do. A potential major drawback could be the cost. It was cheaper to put our daughter in a luxury apartment in New York City (shared with four others) than it was to keep her in the NYU dorm system. Another drawback was that it was easier and safer to buy drugs in the dorm than it was in Washington Square Park, less than two blocks away. Both choices have their good and bad points. You have to figure which is best for you.

How old are you? I knew a guy who was in his 40’s and lived in the dorm when I was in college.

Dorm life can be convenient – you’re close to classes, you don’t have to cook, for example. It’s easier than looking all over the place to find an apartment or house, and finding roommates you can live with, especially if you don’t know anyone, and you don’t know the area. Try it for 1 semester, and then decide.

Also, ask the college residence hall office if there’s a dorm set aside for older students, or grad students, for example. You may be able to avoid living next to the party animal freshman.

I was an RA (at age 26) and had people on my floor from 16-53. Just don’t get a roomate – that is really difficult for an older student. Enjoy being a student – don’t think you are too old for anything – join clubs and be active on campus.

some schools have specific housing for freshmen, 2nd years, upper classmen, etc. see what your university provides, and if they dont have specific class housing, you may live with younger students. but dorm life is def an experience you want to have before your college years are over. i say do it!
