pell grant dilemma… please help?

i’m 19 and live with my fiancee and his family.i have talked to the college about getting the pell grant.they told me that i need a copy of my fathers tax return.i have been asking him for it, and he will not give it to me.my fiancee works, but i can’t use his tax return, because we aren’t married.i can’t apply with my own infomation b/c im unemployed, don’t have any kids, and not married yet.i can’t use my step-fathers tax return copy b/c he makes to much, and can’t go through my mom, b/c she is unemployed.the only options that i have right now according to the college is to get married, have a baby, or get a job.a long time ago my fiancee and i decided that he is going to work outside the home untill i get out of college, then he will go to college and work at home.i’m going to go to college so i can have a work at home job.that way when we have kids i’m home all the time to take care of them.and he may join later working at home.anyone got any other way they can think of to help out

Unfortunately, unless you can answer “yes” to any of the following you will need your father’s tax return:

were you born before January 1, 1984

are you a graduate or professional student

do you have children you support

do you have legal dependents

are you an orphan or ward of the court

are you active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces

are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces

You can appeal your status to your financial aid office, but they usually only grant the appeal in extenuating circumstances (like an incarcerated parent for example). Given your father’s refusal to provide his necessary information, you could see if they would consider reviewing your request if you can prove what you have done to get his information.

Talk to a financial aid officer at your school for further guidance. Good luck!

Unfortunately, your mom’s and step father’s income will count until you are 24 years old unless you get married like the financial aid person said. It is the way the financial aid works unfortunately due to the federal government regulations. However, you could search for outside scholarships which can add up. A final option is to work for the college itself and if you work a certain amount of hours per week, the college will pay for your tuition. I have included some informational websites below. Good luck!

Where there is a will, there is way. At one time I worked with a friend who had three children and a new born. She worked as a realtor and brought her baby in the office. There was a single mom of four who worked, went to school at the same time, then graduated from college with a degree. Even my brother worked while raising his family and earned his CPA at night. It all comes down to you and what you really want to do. You can do it!!

Okay, I see two options for you. Work on your father… let him know that just because he is giving his information does’nt require him to pay for your education… On the contrary by providing the tax info you are actually able to get fin aid from the school.

Also, you dismissed providing your mom’s income “b/c she is unemployed”. Why not provide her income? If she was unemployed in 2006 then that’s BETTER for you!!! Find out if she did taxes for 06 and use them if your dad won’t give up his. Usually though, the student uses the parent who provided the most support the most recently… but something to think about.

Good Luck.

The Pell Grant is based on your efc and number of credits, it does not change based on in state vs out of state. It is standard for all.

You either need your parents or get a partime job or you can wait a year. I found interesting information about your answer, college loans, scholarships, college grants , pertime jobs here. http://all-student-loan-consolidation.blogspot.com/2007/07/college-loan-consolidation.html Good luck!
