If they are federal student loans, you can typically defer them if you go back to school, whether you consolidate them or not. Remember, interest accrues during deferment, so if you can pay the interest while you’re in school, that will help you keep your total debt to a minimum.

In certain circumstances you do lose some deferment benefits with consolidation, so best idea is to contact your lender(s) and have them help you figure out what your best option is.
