ok here’s the situation…..?

I have been going to comm college on and off since 2001 and have accumulated 150 attempted credits and 90 regular credits….I have interests (biology, psychology) but I still have no idea what I really want to do. So, I think I essentially screwed myself out of any financial aide…I think I have enough for an oregon transfer but need more math and bio….how do I fix the situation with FA?

Groan. So basically your completion rate sucks and attempted hours rate is way too high. Okay, here are some options.

1. You can petition the fin aid office to increase the max of attempted hours for you. Usually you have to write a letter, explaining your situation and why you have so many hours and no associates degree yet. Sometimes they will up the max hours you can have to get fin aid. The petition usually goes to a committee who determines if you have a legit reason for not having your associates degree already. They also usually like to see a “plan” in your letter – of how soon exactly you would graduate. So if you do this, you would need to explicitly say… “I just need this class and this class to earn my associates degree, an I’ll be done.” Telling them, “I don’t really don’t know what I want to do” isn’t going to get you a break.

2. You can file for graduation at the community college. Surely, SURELY, with 90 friggin’ hours you have enough hrs to graduate with an associates in SOMETHING. Reminder: associates degrees usually are earned at 60 hours or so. At the point to where you are at right now with college… it doesn’t matter what you get your degree in…. Honestly.

3. You can transfer to Oregon ASAP. (Many students transfer to a four year college with only 1 or 2 semesters of community college under their belt because the entrance requirements are easier on transfers than hs grads.) The only thing you need to be warned about is at a four year school their maximum attempted hours will likely be 160 hours. (Because you should have earned a bachelors degree at 120 hours.) So in a semester you’ll be in the same boat your at at the community college and you will need to go through the same process.

Good Luck.

well, it depends on the kind of aid you want. Most grants only pay for however many credits it takes to get a degree. 150 attempted hours is almost a 4 year degree. I don’t know why you only got 90 regular credits. But typically, a 4 year anniversary will only transfer 90 credits from a comm college. Also you have to make sure that the school you are transferring to accepts the classes you have taken. Some schools have direct transfer agreements with some 4 yr colleges and it waives a lot of the university requirements. The best thing to do is, is apply for FA, send it to the school you want to go to and call the schools FA office and tell them your situation and see what they say. I went to comm college off and on since 1994, finally got my AA in 2005 and have been at a university full time since then and I still get grants and student loans.
