how many years can you be out of college before the credits you already have no longer count?

I have an associates, but a total of 88 credits. Thing is I have not taken any classes since 2001. Will i lose those additional credits?

You shouldn’t lose any, so long as the school you’re going to accepts all of them. If you’re going back to the same school, you should retain all of them. I got my associates in 2002 and just went back to school. Not all of the credits I have counted, as it was a different school, but MOST of them were able to be transferred to a similar course.

When I transfered I was told that credits dont expire. It was about 4 years since i had taken a class and some of the classes were 8 years old.

The general answer is that college credit does not “expire.” You will always have those units, and–depending on the school or program you enter in the future–you will probably be able to apply them to further education.

There are cases in which older coursework may be discounted, but most of these relate to individual programs.

*A graduate program, for instance, might require that foreign language courses be no older than 5 years. (The principle is that if a person hasn’t done anything with the language in 5 years, she/he probably doesn’t know it well enough for study purposes.)

*An accounting degree might require that students have taken all their major classes within the past 7 years. (A school wouldn’t want to give a degree to someone who had taken her/his accounting classes in 1950. Rules and technology have changed.)
