how many years can i receive financial aid for school?

I think this is my fourth year receiving financial aid from FAFSA for college and my friend just told me that after the fourth year i cant get any more financial aid, that they only give you financial aid for four years. Is that true? If i continue going to school will i get financial aid? and what about graduate school? Do i get financial aid as long as i go to school?

No they can give you financial aid past four years. Each school is different but most schools fund up to 150 hours of college, Past that you have to show that you’re close to graduation or find some other aid.

Yes, it does. Financial aid is funded by the federal government, and the school decides ultimately who gets how much. The new regulations state that a student can receive up to 150% of the required credit hours for a degree of financial aid funding. In a community college, this is up to about 90 units. Your university apparently has tighter restrictions, as many schools do. Given your time to be spent in the community college, university will not (and should not) require you to use another 4 and a half years of aid.

The financial aid office is required by federal law to monitor your academic progress. This includes your GPA and the number of classes you have attempted/completed. The aid office can offer you financial aid as long as you continue to meet their guidelines, including the guideline that you have not attempted 150% of the course work required to obtain your degree. For example, say your degree requires you to complete 120 hours of course work. Once you exceed 180 hours (120 * 150%) of course work then the aid office can deny you additional financial assistance. You are always able to appeal this decision (for example you are working on two degrees at the same time, you were delayed in getting your degree due to a medical/family circumstance, etc.), but the school’s decision is final.
