If you want the facts.

First, make an appointment with a counselor at your school explain to them what is going on so they can document your special circumstances. Grants do not have to be repaid.

Next, contact your schools fin aid office and ask them what restrictions will you have for the future if you need to stop attending classes.

When and if they send you a letter. respond immediately. you may have to attend a workshop to become eligible for grants at that school for the future.

Most schools are separate institutions and becoming ineligible at one institution has absolutely nothing to do with schools out of their own districts.

Don’t stress get your life in order and go back to school as soon as the major difficulties in your life become less bothersome to you.

I think you may not have to pay it back, but you will not be able to get federal aid again. If you end up returning to school later on, they won’t allow you to get it for so long to penalize you. I think it would be until you actually did complete the amount of units on your own that you are enrolled in now. So if its 12 units, then you will have to complete 12 without any financial aid before you would be eligible again. You can go into your school too to find out from the financial aid office. If there is any way its best to ride it out and try to get a passing grade, if its too late for that you can see if you can do a formal drop of your classes. Enrollment would know of the deadline for that.

Check with your schools financial aid office for sure, but generally, it will look something like this.

WITHDRAWAL AND OVER PAYMENTS

Federal regulations specify that you attend at least 60% of the semester before you become eligible for 100% of your

federal student aid awards for that term. If you withdraw from all your classes before you have completed at least 60% of the semester, the College must determine what portion of your federal awards you are entitled to receive according to federal regulations. If you have received, or the college has received on your behalf, more federal student aid funds than the formula allows, you will have to repay any award amount to which you were not entitled. If you fail to repay any award amount to which you were not entitled, you risk losing your eligibility for future federal aid payments.

If you decide to drop out before your schools 100% deadline you will have to pay back the money based on how far along in the semester you are. That just changed recently, before you could get away with not paying. Also with failing classes you have only 2 per semester that you can actually fail without having to pay the balance of those classes. So if you fail three classes they will have you pay the balance of only one class. hope this helps.
