Do you have to apply for FAFSA?

Is it a requirement to apply for FAFSA when you apply for school? Or can you just take out a student loan and pay for what the scholarships don’t cover? And even if theres no scholarships, do you have to apply for FAFSA in order to go to school?

It is not a requirement to fill out a FAFSA, but you may be missing out on government funding. Also, the Federal Student Loans that become available with filling out you FAFSA carry far better interest rates and benefits than going through a private loan. Typically, taking out private loans is a last resort for most students.

You should apply for financial aid because filling out the FAFSA form is completely free. The FAFSA form simply informs you of what you are qualified for. This does not mean that you are forced to accept what they indicate you are qualified for.

Once you know what you are qualified for, your school will put together a Financial Aid package for you, at which time you can choose whether to accept certain loans or not.

One thing to keep in mind; if you would like to receive Federal Grants through Financial Aid, which is money from the government that you do not have to pay back, you still need to fill out a FAFSA form. It is probably a good idea to fill out a FAFSA if you think that you may need any financial help to go to college. The government determines your monetary needs with this application and even though you might not qualify for a grant or work study your school can use the FAFSA to offer you a loan through their preferred lenders. Preferred lenders usually gives you the best rates or better than seeking out a bank on your own. Just FYI, I just graduated from school and I got all the help I can get to pay for it.

You don’t have to apply for FAFSA. It’s a federal air to help students that are less privileged. If you can afford to take a loan and don’t have the need for federal aid, you don’t have to apply for it. Such as, if you can pay for school with a loan, or grant, a scholarship or mom n dad’s money, you don’t have to apply for FAFSA. You may not even qualify for it. So, FAFSA is for students who have very little or no income and for students that come from low income families.

Once you graduate high school, you don’t HAVE to do anything! Seriously though, it is completely up to you. Most colleges and universities link their financial aid to the FAFSA, so if you are seeking scholarships and grants from your college, check with the financial aid office to see what they recommend. I recommend filling it out as soon as you can. Sometimes you can get a ton of free grants and scholarships from the government just for applying, and you don’t have to accept the offers if you don’t want to. Can’t hurt to try, and you can do the whole thing online now.

You can also take out private loans or go through a student loan company to pay for your college if you wish. It is up to you.

Good luck! 🙂

You don’t have to, but it’s a good idea to. You don’t have to accept the aid if you’re eligible.

If you’re looking to get a loan, I’d strongly suggest filling out the FAFSA because there’s a chance you can get grants (which you don’t have to pay back) and if you end up getting a loan through your FAFSA application, they are very low interest.

you dont have to apply to go to school, but its free, and you have to do it to get the subsidized(no interest) stafford loan- currently at fixed 6.8%

that will save you a lot more than if you took a loan out from a bank at a credit-based variable rate.

most schools make you do it to get the parent plus loan, too, but not always.

why wouldnt you want to do the fafsa???

It doesn’t hurt to apply. You could get a pell grant to go to school that may cover the cost of tuition and books, and what ever is left over they sent out a check to you for the amount left over. I went to school for free for 3 years. I would definitely apply for it. All you need is your parents tax stuff for 2006.

Only if you want federal aid.

If you can pay a different way, more power to you!
