Yes. To answer your question, sometimes it is possible to get fin aid without a HS dip or GED, but being admitted to the college without it sometimes depends on the school and your age.

Now, say you are able to get admitted to the college as an adult student. Many schools don’t require adults to have a HS dip or GED to get in. (In my location, the state board of education will actually award dropouts a high school diploma after earning 30 college credit hours).

Anyway, here is the kicker to keep in mind when going to college without a HS dip or GED regarding fin aid. You will have to pass an “Ability to Benefit” test to receive fin aid. No pass, no $$. Anyone who has a HS dip or GED doesn’t have to pass this test, so if you take it and fail, get your GED and enroll in school and skip this step.

Good Luck!

I am 61 years old. I have attended online university now for 4 years. I need 7 more classes to graduate with my bachelors and a minor. Up until now I have gotten financial aid, loans and a pell grant twice a years. I have never been asked for my High School Diploma. . . . . until now. I graduated 48 years ago, well isn t that handy. Yes I did graduate from High School, but why after I am almost ready to graduate are they asking for my diploma and, get this, my transcripts, NOW! I don t understand this at all. I am a 3.7 GPA student, been on the DEANS lists every semester, and am in 2 national honor societies and have been asked to join an International society. Now, after 48 years, I don t even know if it is possible to retrieve my high school transcript?????? At my age I really don t have a reason to carry around my High School diploma and it happens to be in some storage in an entirely different state. This whole thing is not right in my opinion. How we perform in High School can be way different that how we perform in college, but it does not reflect how intelligent we truly are. It does, however, determine what school you will get into as well as scholarships. Stay tuned for a followup, I will let you know if I can find transcripts after all these years, diploma as well, and if I get to finish my degrees.

No. You need a HS Dipoma or GED to be accepted into any College or University. No diploma = no college…which = no fin aid

Now, if you are still in high school, most Community Colleges have agreements with local high schools that allow students to take college level classes for free, except for fees associates with those classes (lab fees, mostly.)

If you’re referring to Fin. Aid for collegem, then I don’t think you can. You need to graduate from high school to go to college (that’s the prerequisite for college). There are certain schools that allow you to take college level classes while you’re still working on your HS diploma (or GED), but i think you are limited in what you can take and how many classes you are allowed to take.

YES! My friend has no highschool diploma, yet she gets financial aid for college now while corresponding with a online highschool now to earn her degree. You can too, but I would go back to highshool by mail or online to earn a diploma also. They are good to have nowadays. Go to a Community College.

If you somehow got into college without a highschool diploma then you probably should get your GED, but if you go to a JC then you can go to the fafsa site and try it out, cause it doesn’t say you have to have it.
