You have to be considered an independant student by the federal governments requirements.

I am copying the following from the federal goverments website for the FAFSA form.

“For federal student financial aid purposes, you are considered independent if you can answer Yes to any of the following questions:

Were you born before January 1, 1984?

At the beginning of the school year 2007-2008, will you be working on a master’s or doctorate program (such as an MA, MBA, MD, JD, Ph.D., Ed.D., graduate certificate, etc.)?

As of today, are you married?

Do you have children who receive more than half of their support from you?

Do you have dependents (other than your children or spouse) who live with you and who received more than half of their support from you, now and through June 30, 2008?

Are (a) both of your parents deceased, or (b) are you (or were you until age 18) a ward/dependent of the court?

Are you currently serving on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces for purposes other than training?

Are you a veteran of the U.S. Armed Forces?

If you are identified as an independent student, your school may ask you to verify the answers to some or all of the questions above before you can receive federal student aid. If you are a health profession student , you may be required to provide information about your parents even though you are an independent student. If you are not sure if your course of study is considered a health profession program, contact the school’s financial aid office.”

Okay, I get that dad is basically not in the picture. The big question is: why are not on speaking terms with mom? Is she a drug user, alcoholic, abusive? If it’s one of those you may have a case to be awarded a professional judgment. If you are just not talking to her because you got mad at her, then you wouldn’t. Have you ever been a ward of the court? Homeless? Emancipated by the courts? A yes to any of those questions would make you ‘independent’ but keep in mind you’d have to produce proof to the school. If you are going to try to go for a professional judgment (dependency override) you will need to write a detailed letter as well as get at least 2 other family members to write a letter stating your case. When writing these letters you need to state the facts: mom was arrested for using drugs and has been in and out of jail since Jan 2007. Don’t put emotion into it: Mom is such a drug using loser. I don’t know what your particular case is, but, to get a PJ you need to have extenuating circumstances. Good Luck.

Age and not living with ur parents isn’t the problem. If your parents are supporting u financially or paying ur housing cost etc, then their fin info is considered.

Now if your 22, not living with your parents and you fully support yourself and have for several yrs then u can be classified as Independant and their info would not matter.

Call FAFSA or email and get clarification. Sometimes your college or university financial aid office can help clarify things. There r some options or considerations. Sounds like they are considering your parents income. Good luck,

You need to add all your parents information. You must be 24 or married or have kids or a few other things not to include parents info.

It doesn’t matter if you live with your parents or not, or if they support you or not. Or even if they do not claim you on your tax forms.

Have your parents to apply for a PIN number on www.fafsa.ed.gov and then get them to give you their tax forms and enter it on your fafsa if you haven’t already. They can sign the fafsa using their FAFSA pin number.

If you didnt live with your parents and they didnt claim you in the most recent tax year, you don’t need it. Call them someone is mistaken…and this form is tricky to fill out. You should be able to do it on your own. I did, people do make mistakes.

Michelle and Found-1 are both correct. You will need your parents’ information.

your school will help you feel it out, but on the form you do not have to add your parents, let who ever is filling it out that you do not live with your parents or if you were a foster child then DHR would have your parents info.
