Utopias

A utopian society is said to be an unreal political and social system in which the relationship between the country and the people in that country are well distributed. The novel candie, Voltaire who is the narrator describes Eldora do as a concealed utopian kingdom. The Eldora do is described in the novel as a kingdom that is full of joy. This is a country where everything is good. This is because the country has good education system, attractive places and there is no poverty in this country as there is plenty of gold which is looked as pebbles. There are differences between the Gulliver’s Houynhm Land and Candide’s El Dorado because in the Gulliver houynhm land there is no gold and there is poverty in this country. The country also has no good education system unlike in Eldora do which has good education system. People in Eldora do live in joy and harmony while people in Gulliver Houynhm have no peace and happiness. This is shown in this novel when Gulliver goes to this country. Gulliver has no peace in Brobdingnag as he feels intimidated because of the many giants in the country who have more power than small people in the country this makes Gulliver to lose hope of living in this country as he wishes to die and he becomes more emotional until he later becomes overwhelmed and gives up and curls to fatal position (Swift, 2001). This is in contrast to the country Eldora do where people have happiness and peace. Gulliver wishes if he never traveled to this country as it is worse than his own country. People in Brobdingnag face a lot of challenges as it is shown by Gulliver when a small child and rats threaten him but he tries to fight them and he loses. This shows that there is no respect in this country unlike in Eldora do where people respect each other and have no challenges. Eldora do is a utopian country as it does not have a government and religion thus people in this country do not pray as they have been given everything but they only thank him but in the Brobdingnag people have government and religion. The government makes people in that country to be power less as it is evidenced when Gruville talks to the king about how to get more powers and also in the court Gruville has no powers but to obey the queen and the little girl so as to get protection. People in Eldora do are free and have their own powers thus they don’t need to bow down to any one so that they can get protection. People in Eldora do have equality as they respect each other but people in Brobdingnag have no equality but they need to conform to the many giants in the country so as to live in peace and to get assistance (Swift,2001). Eldora do is an ideal world as shown in the novel because men are equal and people in this country do not value money as they have enough gold which the young children play with as pebbles while in the Brobdingnag people use all means to get money. For example the farmer who welcomed Gruville at first has used Gruville to make shows so as to get money. This shows the inequality in this country as the farmer has used Gruville until he has become emaciated though Gruville can not refuse to be used in exchange for money. Another difference is that people in Eldora do are free unlike other countries like Europe and Brobdingnag. This makes the country to be a perfect world. Eldora do has no jails and lawsuits as men are free but in Brobdingnag the country has lawsuits and jails thus people are not free in this country but they are governed by law and people in this country live fearfully as Gruville portrays that he lives in fear but not like an hero like people in Eldora do. The two utopias are different in that the Eldora do government provides its guests with good

food without any pay like working in the government but in Brobdingnag the government does not give its guests food free but they have to show some respect and lower themselves so as to get food and clothes. This is shown by Gruville who has to show respect to the king and queen so as to continue getting food and clothes. The queen and other ladies in the court do not respect Gruville and this makes Gruville to live in the court like a pet as he only survives because he has good manners. This good manner makes the queen to give him food. People in Eldora do have strength both physical and intellectual thus they are able to live in peace but in Brobdingnag people lack strength both physical and intellectual thus they are overcome by minor problems. This makes big people in this country to intimidate the little people. For example Gruville is intimidated by people who are around him and even a small animal like a monkey also intimidates him as he has no power in the country and in the court (Swift, 2001).
