NYC Community Council Representative Evaluation

Introduction

The overall performance of the New York City Council can be attributed to the contributions of some individual members of the council such as Domenic M. who is the council representative of the district 47 in the New York city council, Betsy Gotbaum who is the New York City public advocate, William Thompson who is the New York City comptroller, and Mike Bloomberg who is the New York City mayor. They are made contributions in areas concerning education, health, rent, housing, work, transport, etc. This paper seeks to evaluate the performance of Domenic M. Recchia, Jr as the community council representative in the New York City Council, Betsy Gotbaum as the New York City public advocate, William Thompson as the New York City comptroller, and Mike Bloomberg as the New York City mayor.

Domenic’s Performance

Housing

Domenic has been on the forefront in protecting the public housing tenants. His protection for members of his community and the entire society is seen when he organizes demonstrations for people to protest against hikes in rent (New York Times, 1). On the issue of education, Domenic is not left behind especially when it comes to the rights of parents. He has fought for the right of the parents to participate in policy making in the schools. He recognizes the importance of parents to both the school and the students. In his own view, parents should be involved in making decisions that affect families and should be treated with respect just like any other member involved in the running of the school activities (New York Times, 1). He also recognizes that parents have important roles that affect the performance in the schools and thus urges that parents should be given the necessary tools and resources. Domenic has not been left behind in addressing the issue of health especially involving Swine Flu. His Swine Flu Community Outreach Plan is meant to see to it that all members of affected communities and parent s who have some children have the necessary information that they to help them in attending the issue. He especially addressed the issue of swine flu in relation to school closure (New York

Bloomberg’s Performance

Mike Bloomberg has been on the forefront in addressing the issue of transportation. He helped in improving the services given to city residents by addressing the issue of rail commuters, bus and subway services, HOV lanes, etc. his intention was to help the new Yorkers in getting to their places of interest faster, more conveniently, and safer than it has ever been (New York Times, 1). Through him, many improvements have been made on the side of the rail especially on the subways that connect to the different places. He has also addressed the issue of points where the buses leave the town leading to their expansion which has helped reduce congestion in the city.

Gotbaum’s Performance

Betsy Gotbaum has not been left behind especially on the issue of health. Together with the New York City Comptroller William C. Thompson, Jr called for investigation on the allegations about the 11 New York City HHC acute care hospitals. They had a feeling that HHC were not being accountable for their actions in the healthcare organizations (Jeffrey, 1). They did all these to ensure that new Yorkers get quality patience care which they deserve. The reporting of adverse incidents as per the requirements of the law by the HHC hospitals was also not in order and these two individuals addressed the issue so that new Yorkers get the quality care that they expect.

Thompson’s Performance

The NYC comptroller William Thompson has been involved mostly in issues concerning pension. This is a very sensitive issue not only in New York but also in other countries. His

concern was on the voice of the shareholder when it comes to compensation of corporate executives. This is to ensure that the process of compensation is transparent and that the individuals are accountable. William Thompson has also made contributions on the issue of health especially on the issue of HHC hospitals (Jeffrey, 1). On the issue of energy, William Thompson has been on the forefront addressing the issue of energy in the increasing rate of energy needs due to the development of new towns and cities.

Conclusion

Domenic M. who is the council representative of the district 47 in the New York city council, Betsy Gotbaum who is the New York City public advocate, William Thompson who is the New York City comptroller, and Mike Bloomberg who is the New York City mayor have made great contributions in modern developments in the New York City. Domenic M. Recchia, Jr has been involved in community activities that have helped in improving the quality of life by new Yorkers. He has addressed the issue of housing, education, etc. Bloomberg has mostly contributed on the issue of transportation so that new Yorkers can move around the town faster, safer, and more conveniently. Gotbaum and Thompson have addressed the issue of health so that New Yorkers can get the best quality of care. Although there might be some lagging, the contributions of these individuals cannot be taken for granted.
