Structural and Behavioral Characteristics

Natural selection is a process by which inherited characteristics that make an organism to survive and reproduce successful become more common in a population over a given time. There are certain structural features that make a human being to have selective advantage. This include polyploidy that is a human cell can have more than two homologous chromosomes and this allows more recombination during meiosis leading to more genetic variability in the persons offspring. Genetic variability is a measure of how person’s genotypes differ from one population to another. These variations depend on environmental factor and genetic factors. Genetic variability is important as it makes a person to adapt to different environmental factors. It also determines how a person responds to environmental pressure enabling him to survive and the vulnerability of the person to diseases and toxic substances. Another factor is genetic mutation. Genetic mutation contributes to a person’s genetic variability. It can have a positive effect or negative effect or neutral results on individual fitness. Phenotype gives human beings selective advantage as it influences his genetic variability. These are the physical characteristics of an individual and they are determined by his genetic composition. Behavioral factors can also affect human beings in a negative or positive manner hence affecting his survival. For example competition, competition is said to be two types. This includes intraspecific and extra specific. Intra specific competition occurs among species of the same type while inter specific occurs among species of different kind. Human beings face intra specific competition in their living environment. This can be informing of food or medicine. During this period the person who is accessible to the food or medicine is able to survive and the rest die. As a result of competition people move from one environment to another so as to survive. Immigration and translocation are other factors that influence human survival. During immigration people move in or out of a given population. When this person moves from a genetically isolated population to a new population he increases the genetic variability of the next generation. This makes it fit for the offsprings to survive Human being has body cells and these structural factors occur within the cells and this makes them ideal for discussion. The environmental factors are crucial for human survival. For a human being to have a selective advantage he should use or posses the structural and environmental factors (Darwin, 2003).
