Cz there was a word ‘for’, so four was invented to differentiate. But word ‘forty’ didn’t exist, so it was adapted without adding ‘u’!
Hope it helps.
Good luck!

Help I’m scared I think that is a little extreme but the English Language in general is hardest language to learn. This is just part of the reason. There is no reason for the u to be in four and there is no reason for it not to be in forty. I know that doesn’t help but it is the truth and sometimes the truth is stranger than fiction.

English spelling is not logical. There are some rules, but many exceptions. It frustrates not only foreigners trying to learn English but also schoolchildren in countries where English is the native language. Haphazard spelling has been ridiculed by a number of people, one of the funniest is that by George Bernard Shaw who suggested the alternative spelling for “fish” as “ghoti” — “gh” as in rough, “o” as in women, and “ti” as in nation. Orwell and others tried to reform spelling to no avail. Summary, yes it is illogical, but one gets used to it as one resigns oneself to an occasionally irritating marriage with the consolation that it is better than not being married at all.
