Theatre is a French word that the English have used, and kept the same spelling. There are many words that British English spell differently than American English.

These words are generally French or Latin derivatives. A few examples: litre, spectre, calibre, sabre, sombre. The link explains it in more detail.

because centre is a british word and technically theatre is completely different word from theater. theatre means it encompasses all aspects of drama while theater is only acting OR where a play takes place (thank you intro to drama)

Because it’s English! It’s not meant to be logical.

But don’t expect Americans to understand your question…they spell all three of them “er”.
