Why do we say he got the short end of the stick?
A stick can be short, but how can the end of a stick be short? It makes no sense.

because back in the beginning of the 1900’s, loggers would carry big logs by holding sticks underneath them, and if you had the short end of the stick you had to carry more, and the log had more chance of rolling over your hand.
