Why do people say Californ-I-A ?

with the emphasize on the IA part. What does that mean?

I’m guessing it was named by a Spanish person and that there originally used to be an accent on the “n” which would make it a “ny” sound.

I’m guessing the original spelling was Califoña

After time people have just started spelling it differently but they still saty it the same.

I think it is just from a song (The Beach Boys I believe in Surfin’ USA) and has caught on as a catch phrase of sorts.
