Why are the upper level seats called the nosebleed section?
i’ve never really thought about it but someone asked me last night why it was called the nosebleed section….and I had no idea what to tell them!!

As others have stated, it is because there is less moisture in the air the higher you go in the atmosphere, so it is common to get a nosebleed.
So, to get the point across that you are REALLY far away from the center of the action, you say you’re in the nosebleed section.

It’s an allusion to and obvious exaggeration of the fact that the seats are so high that the elevation causes one’s nose to bleed due to the rarefied air.
