It is wracking – as in I am damaging my brain trying to remember where I put my car keys.
You cannot use rack as in I am racking my brain since racking implies purposeful intention of pain, which unless you are a sadist, makes no sense.
You could say, trying to remember is racking my brain since since you are no longer the subject and are not intentionally causing yourself pain – the need to find the keys is causing the pain.
But why not just use wracking there too.

My Grammar school taught that it is ‘Wrack your brain’ … I still believe it.
