which is right?
“have you seen the kid who took my pencil?” or
“have you seen the kid what took my pencil?” i hear the first one in the u.s. and the second one in the u.k…..which one do you guys say is the right way to say it?

“who” is correct… “what” in this context would be considered incorrect in UK English; it is a fairly common error.

“who took my pencil” is grammatically correct for both the U.S. and the U.K. A kid is a person, and so “what” does not make any sense, “who” implies a person, and so is correct. The second one is just slang.
