This is Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night, right?

Well, the ‘pun’ in here isn’t like a pun would be today I don’t think. But Orsino is speaking of his great love for Olivia. He is telling (the fool) to play for him music, because, as the saying goes, ‘music is the food of love’. Therefore, if he gets too much, then he won’t desire her anymore.

Hope that helped.

Having suggested that music is the food of love (i.e. nourishes the growth of love), he then extends the metaphor by talking about eating too much, and killing the appetite.

I can’t see a pun! It must be extremely subtle or am I having a blonde day?
