Where did the term “hooch” come from?

I noticed that a lot of people use the word “hooch” when talking about home made and/or illegal alcohol. Where did the term come from?

It’s short for “hoochinoo,” which is a type of distilled spirit made by the Tlingit Indian tribe in Alaska; supposedly the tribe was a source of illegal alcohol during prohibition (remember, Alaska wasn’t a state back then, so the constition didn’t apply to them).

I thought “hooch” was another name for a dog like in the movie Turner and Hooch (lol) But, according to definition, it’s an alcoholic liquor, especially inferior or bootleg whiskey, and…yet another name for marijuana. ORIGIN: abbreviation of Hoochinoo, a type of distilled liquor made by Alaskan Indians, especially during the years of Prohibition here in the continental U.S.

It came from the Charlie S Hootch Families in Alaska
