To weep crocodile tears is to put on an insincere show of sorrow. The reference is to the ancient notion that crocodiles weep while devouring their prey.

Crocodiles do indeed have tear ducts (and the glands necessary to make tears – lachrymal glands) and produce tears to lubricate the eyes as humans do.

However, they don’t cry in the same way that we do (attributed to an emotion), rather it’s a purely biological response. Whatever emotion they experience when finding and devouring prey, I can bet it isn’t remorse.
