Use a thesarus. Take a word that makes you sound normal and look it up. Use the one that looks REALLY different. 😀

Don’t try to “sound smart”. Your essay will sound so much more real and believable if you use your own voice. If you don’t use big words when you talk about things in class, don’t put them in your essay. There are some words that you can change using a thesaurus that will make your essay sound less redundant. If you change very common words like “things” and “stuff”, it will sound better and more put together without sounding like you cut and paste sentences from the internet. If you are writing about a subject that you have an opinion on, using facts and logic to support your claims will make you sound much smarter than big words that you would probably never use otherwise. I’m not suggesting using slang words, etc. in your essays. I’m just saying not to second-guess your real intelligence. You will never sound stupid if you present your own opinion in a mature manner, using cited facts to back it up.

I hope this helps. Good luck in future essay writing!

In your own vocabulary. I’m an English teacher, and when my kids use words they don’t know in an attempt to sound smarter than they really are, they just make themselves look stupid. You won’t fool anyone, so don’t try.

Pay attention in class, and take good notes. Are there certain words or phrases that the teacher uses often? You might want to use those when appropriate.

Also, use the vocabulary from your textbook.

Use a thesaurus CAREFULLY. Don’t use a word you’ve never heard before, or one that you don’t completely understand. It’s better to use simpler language than to make yourself look foolish.

If you look up words just for this purpose, it’s likely to have the opposite effect to the one you want. People sound smart when they have done their research and know what they are talking about. Having the confidence to express yourself in the words you know should make a good impression. The best way to extend your vocabulary is to read widely. Hope this helps.

Think about the words you want to use, then look at thesaurus.com to see if there are any good synonyms. Be careful though, if you use too many of those “upper level” words, it’ll have the opposite effect and just make your paper hard to read. This is coming from an English teacher. Good luck!
