When is the right time to use a comma?

It’s really embrassing to ask this; but I never really learned when’s the right time for a person to use a comma. I would like to know when to use it in sentences and not when you substitute it instead of ”and” ie. I love berries, apples, and bananas, because I know how to do that already. Thanks for your help in advance!

First of all, ignore the person who told you not to put the comma after apples, it an be used or omitted, it is a personal choice.

Commas are also used before or after IF and WHEN phrases. (ie: If you have time, can you stop at the store? When you have time, please call me back.) Another time you would use them is when you would pause, if you were speaking rather than writing. Also, before or after a quotation. (ie: “I see”, she said.)

There are many others but those are the most common places you would use a comma.

This is what I have learned…a comma can also seperate two sentences…The later sentence should be the first if you were to use a period..such as: I cried so hard, when, he told me I was home…In sentence form it would be: When he told me I was home I cried so hard…

Well, hope you understand….I tried to come up with more, but, it is hard when you put stress upon it…lol…

Compare these two sentences:

1. To pardon, not to execute.

2. To pardon not, to execute.

If you are a prisoner, your life can depend on a comma.
