Might be a rebus. A rebus (Latin: “by things”) is a kind of word puzzle which uses pictures to represent words or parts of words; for example: H + (picture of an ear) = Hear,

There are some at the sites below.

FYI – Dingbats is the name of a board game that was devised by Paul Sellers and is currently manufactured by Ravensburger. The game, for two or more people, involves solving rebuses (puzzles in which a common word or saying is hidden in a cryptic or otherwise unique arrangement of symbols). There is a time limit to solve each puzzle, and success means you can move further along the board. The winner is the person to reach the end square first. The name Dingbats is a registered trademark.

The name may relate to the style in which the rebuses were printed, involving prolific use of dingbats.

I think that you are referring to pictograms, puzzles that work on the same principle as Egyptian heiroglyphics. Dingbats are an arrangement of letters and punctuation to convey a meaning.

OBEY

Pretty sure they are called ‘ding-bats’……great fun. We have a boxed game full of them from years ago….probably all very out of date now.
