the only reason for points is to progress you through the levels, the higher the level the more questions you can ask/answers you can post.

The points on Yahoo! answers are simply meant to help you to distinguish between how trustworthy a person is, and also how who is a better answerer. Points also encourage greater participation to get to the next level. They can’t be traded in for anything, but their just fun to get.
