What is the plural of Elvis?

At school, some boys have been having an Elvis look-alike competition. A Latin teacher refers to them as ‘the Elvi’. Is this correct, or just pretentious and silly?

This official looking site suggests Elvii.

Google seems to mostly agree with Elvii.

Actually thinking about it, if you haven’t seen it written down, he probably is saying Elvii.

“i” is the plural suffix for words of Latin origin ending in “us”, not “is”, so I don’t think it’s really applicable here. It’s more of an amusing play on words, but there’s nothing wrong with doing it for fun. The plural is most certainly NOT Elvis’. That’s the possessive form, not plural, an all-too-common mistake.

Elvi, for Latin

Elvises, for English

Personally, I think any teacher who finds a way to tie his/her material into a student’s ‘everyday life’ (whatever that may be) is on the right track.
