What is the “near future”?

When people speak of the “near future”, what time frame are they referring to? A few months down the road, or a few years down the road?

“near future” to me refers to the time frame of a few months. But everyone’s use of words are different! To be safe I would ask the person who said it to clarify!

Future would be a few years but near future would be in the next few weeks to 3 months.

It is still a very general term. Not really specific & it depends on your frame of reference when using the term.

If I say I will be buying a car in the near future, I (specifically, I) would be saying within the next several months.

If the government says they will get the troops out of Iraq, in the near future, that PROBABLY means within 1-2 years.

Frame of reference. That defines what “near future” means.

It is a term that is used to personalize the person’s statement for them. There are no hard and fast rules as to how you can use the term.

It depends on the context in which it was stated.

“I will be job hunting in the near future.” – This could be anywhere from 6 months to a year.

“Global warming will result in catastrophic events in the near future.” – This could be next year or 100 years.

It can refer to tomorrow, next week, next month and so on. It is just an expression to describes a period of time that is not too far away. Also, it really depends on the person.

To some people, it means as I type this relative to when you asked the question.

The answer is that it depends on context. To me. it normally means within a cycle of some sort.. In a job-related sense, I can accept that it means before the next project is finished. In terms of life, will you accept within a generation, whether human, fruit fly or dog?

That is a real loose translation, but I would think days or weeks not months or years……………
