It actually has become a word of many meanings, but they all go back to the original.

The two most popular are:

1) Patent: to obtain the sole rights, for a specified period of time, to produce a product (can apply to items or ideas) which you have designed and originated.

2) Patent: one of a kind

An example is “Patent leather”: a type of leather which has a shiny, almost glass-like surface (this goes back to the original meaning though, because someone invented/designed/originated the idea and process to make this product.
