Taking for granted is not appreciating something or someone for what they are there for, have to offer, and can do. For instance, suppose you had a friend that you shared a class with and usually copied answers from. Then next term you find out she doesn’t share any classes with you. You took her for granted that she’d always be around for you to copy from her, and now you can’t.

Giving someone the benefit of doubt is the same thing as “taking their word for it”. You are trusting what they do or say will be correct or true, therefore you are not doubting them unless shown otherwise.

What does “Taking up one’s cross daily” really mean? What does he really mean by “taking a break”? What does he mean by “friends with benefits”? Does “general welfare” mean it is a benefit to all citizens or taking from some to benefit others? Seriously…. What do you mean by “friends w/ benefits”?

Taken for granted is like when you have something really special or important but you don’t notice it.

And benefit of doubt is like trusting someone until proven otherwise.

Such a great question. Never even thought of that kind of translation. Really makes you stop dead in your tracks as the ramifications of it sinks in. The Self, this independent part of our soul which always opposes God needs to be terminated. May we always have a view, that this is God’s rich mercy and grace being extended to us, not anything cruel and hateful. This is far from the truth. The Cross truly is a terminating of ourselves. You know brother, when we consider the cross, we sometimes tend to think of it more in view of the Lord’s death, that He died to redeem us… but if we mean business with the Lord, we too have to TAKE UP our cross DAILY and follow the Lord. This is a deeper, inner working of the Lord in us. Each day, we take up the very thing that will kill us, terminate the Self, the I, the Natural man with all the natural tendencies to lead our own lives. To follow the Lord requires the denial of our own way, to follow the Lord as our Way. One person said once that the blood deals with our sins, but the Cross deals with the Self. Someone also said, that on the other side of the cross is resurrection life. Our walk, as we follow the Lord is in newness of Life. If there is no death, there is no life. I am really touched that it takes being passed through death and coming out in resurrection Life to follow this Lamb. And where did the Lamb go? Right to the Cross, to shed that precious blood for our sins.. but this Jesus Christ also died as a grain of wheat, to release His enabling Life into us. This life truly empowers us to deny ourselves, take up our cross DAILY, even moment by moment, to follow the Lord wherever He leads us. With this demand comes the supply of Grace from the Lord. Nothing is brought to us in a wasted way by God. If He brings it to us, to me it means that He has some matters to address in us. Like you touched on here.. its not the romanticised view of paying an outward price like an overseas mission trip. We can be doing these things and be VERY MUCH ALIVE in our Selves. Our Very PERSON is not dealt with by the Lord. What ends up happening is that the Lord does not get to dig deep into us, apply the death of His Cross to who we are, so that who we are and what comes out of us will be fully HIM and HIM ALONE. Our person matters more to the Lord. Whether we are carrying a cross in an outward way of suffering or are we open to the Lord in the small daily things. Our choices, our words, our attitude, our disposition and hang-ups. How we handle people and situations. Do we flare up in the Self, or are we open to the Lord, telling Him to address WHO we are WITH the Cross… so that we can be crossed out so that Christ can shine through. Much too often, we are so strong in the Self and imprison the Lord in us. The taking up of one’s cross daily is always a very practical, honest matter to address and sometimes one we shy away from because it comes with a price, but the benefits far outway the ” present suffering” because there is a greater weight and value beyond what we see. But the Lord sees and knows. Ty so much brother for asking about this today. Such an important reminder…” Lord Jesus, I open to You, deep in me I want to say AMEN and follow You daily. Apply the Cross to who I am, enable and strengthen my spirit man as I take each step in You.”
