Russia existed both before and after the Soviet Union, and was not and is not officially communist. Expanding as it did by military force, the Soviet Union contained more territory than either the old or “new” Russia. Overrun countries have since regained their Independence. e.g. Georgia.

Another difference is that Russia is,or was, a very religious country. The Soviet Union did its best to bring about a godless state.

The Soviet Union was a collection of countries forcibly united into one larger country. Russia was the largest and most powerful of them (and also the one that did the uniting), so Russia became the official language. After the breakup of the Soviet Union, Russia again became a separate country, as did the smaller countries that were forced to unite.
