Its for the efffieciency when using them. If the letters were arranged alphabetically, typing one word will take more effort. That is also the logic between typing class or for touch-typists (people who can type real fast without looking at the keyboard). They can freely/maximize the use of both hands when typing since the letters are in a pattern.

When the keyboard was first arranged this way, on typewriters in the 1880s, the letters were written onto the paper by metal bars which moved and hit the paper as you struck the keys on the keyboard. To avoid too many “tangles” of the metal pieces, letters used frequently were placed at a distance from each other. Studies have shown that, actually, the workload for the hands is not equally shared when using a qwerty keyboard, it is the left hand that has slightly more work to do.

The letters on a keyboard are nor arranged randomly but in a carefully devised pattern to make the more common letters easier to type when using all ones fingers. Some say the real reason is that its inventor Qwerty Uiop wanted his name across the top row but I suspect that they were pulling my leg;)
