A virtue is a character trait valued as being good. The conceptual opposite of virtue is vice.
so if patience is a virtue it is a good character trait, it was generally considered that to be a patient person was a good thing to be, the phrase is quite archaic. It comes from a time
(probably Victorian i.e. 1800’s) when patience particularly in women and children would have been necessary as they were often asked to wait for men. so a patient woman would have been considered to be a good wife and virtuous that is full of the right character traits.
