what is it called when a brand name becomes the generic name?

for example, how many people call tissues “kleenex” (which kleenex is a brand name). Or down South, they call soda “coke” (which is also a brand name)???

There is a word for that-anyone know it?

thanks

it’s called a genericized trademark. that’s why companies have to reword or phrase slogans so that their trademark doesn’t get essentially lost. if the trademark becomes a part of the public ddomain, then companies can’t enforce ownership right. for example, johnson and johnson’s slogan for band-aids used to be “”I am stuck on Band-Aids, ’cause Band-Aid’s stuck on me”and now it’s “I am stuck on Band-Aid brand, ’cause Band-Aid’s stuck on me.” they threw in the word brand so that they can enforce their trademark rights.
