The term originally referred to a test for witches and other crimes: The accused had to hold in his hand a piece of red-hot iron, or had to walk blindfold and barefoot among nine red-hot plough-shares laid at unequal distances. If he escaped uninjured he was accounted innocent.

Today we use ‘trial by fire’ to mean that an inexperienced person is going to have to do adifficult task without enough practice. If they are good enough, they can make it, but it will be rough and stressful on the, Historically it was when people were burned. They believed that God would not let the innocent suffer. Their conviction rate was 100%

‘They are cousins, at best.’ Means that there is an objection to the comparison being made between to dissimilar things or ideas.

Idea 1: gold, is being compared to idea 2: lead. But they are cousins at best. There are few uses to which both gold and lead would be suitable, even though they are both heavy, soft metals.

Cousins are related, but have different parents. The characteristics of one family can not be attributed to another simply because they are cousins.

;-D Sometimes car manufacturers like to put a high level name on a low level car, thinking that people will think the lower car is better than other low level cars. Don’t ya love my little mini Cadillac with the 4 cylinder engine and no headroom?

I think you mean “trial by fire,” meaning to be tested under extreme conditions. “They are cousins, at best” is somehow insulting, but I’m not sure how, or why.
