I think it is just like an empty line for you to fill in. For example: Santa ? comes on Christmas Eve. You know the answer is Clause. In the sample you gave the answers could be anything: I think in this case an action:

now MY HOME WORK is done

now THE DEED is done

now THE HARD PART OF THE EXPERIMENT is done

Usually, you get the (?) symbol where someone is quoting part of a question out of context…

They usually aren’t quoting the end of the sentance and hence missing off the real question mark.. So they put (?) as a ‘virtual’ one

Or…

It could be that the person who is writing the passage is unsure that what he has just said is true
