When you say something and mean it the way it is, but then the other person uses it as another meaning. Like if someone says to you “Are you wearing makeup” and then you assume that they mean that you look trashy or ugly. they can say that you are putting words into their mouth

A person is telling you, or someone else, what you think but it is not really your opinion. Thus, putting their words into your mouth.

Put words in someone’s mouth….

To say what you think someone else should say. eg. I never suggested that she should move — don’t try to put words in my mouth.

Usage notes: sometimes used in the form put words into someone’s mouth

It means that someone (the person saying that) is being accused of saying something that they didn’t say.

For instance:

John and Mary are arguing and John says he doesn’t want Mary’s mother to come visit. Mary says that John hates her mother and wants her dead. John then says “you are just putting words in my mouth” because he never said that he hated Mary’s mother and that’s not what he meant.

it means your saying something that someone else never said. you assume they said it or you think that’s what they meant, for example, a girl says wow im getting chubby and her husband is twice her size, he says, so what are u callin me? an elephant?

he would be putting words in her mouth…

hope this helps you a little. good luck and have a blessed day 😀

You are speaking for another person and they would say something else, but you are dictating what they are saying.

I PERSONALLY HATE THAT TYPE OF BEHAVIOR.
