What does the term 360 and 180 mean when refering to someones actions or condition?

My parents and I hade a huge debate over what each of these terms mean. I think that a complete 360 means landing back to where you started. 180 means taking a whole new direction. Whose right between us?

360 degrees refers to a full circle while 180 degrees is half a circle in terms of geometry. Therefore, when someone says that a condition has done a 360, it means it went full circle or a complete turn-around. A 180 means a half-completion of that condition.

God there are some convoluted answers here.To do a 180 means to turn your back upon:to go in the opposite direction. Those are analogous terms.

To do a 360 means to end up where you started. To come full circle is another way to say it.

People do it all of the time.

You are correct for the most part.

I agree with the 180 , going in a different direction or taking a new path . 360 or full circle takes you right back where you started.

You got it pretty much right. A 360 refers to a complete circle, a total turn-around in views, drection, focus or attitude, etc.

A 180 means a half-circle, like you say, a different direction.

When trying to clean himself up, he made a 180 and was clean for a few months, but then he went a 360 and went back to using drugs again.

If you are northbound and do a 180-degree turn, you are then headed southbound. In other words, you have completely reversed your direction.

Mathematically and logically speaking, if you are northbound and do a 360-degree turn, you are then headed northbound again. In common parlance, however, people often say “360” when the more logically correct phrase would be “180”.

on the Fahrenheit scale the freezing point of water is 32 degrees Fahrenheit. and the boiling point is 212 at standard atmosphere pressure this puts boiling and freezing point of water exactly 180 degrees apart I think this is what it means doing a complete 180, it’s basically saying they are total opposites

I believe 360 means “what goes around, comes around”. Karma, it is. 180 means straight ahead / forward, move on, I think.
