What does slate mean in slang terms?

doesn’t have to do with getting goods and paying for them later?

Put it on the slate = will be paid for later. Another phrase for the same thing is ‘on tick’.

The record, the books, as in “Clear the slate”

“start from scratch” “Start a fresh tally” “let bygones be bygones” It literally comes from a chalkboard which was made of slate and would have the tabs written on it and be wiped clean when the tab was payed.

Slate can also mean to severely criticise, as in “Madonna’s new album was released this week. It was slated in the press.”
