What does “Mr. Pot? Meet Mrs. Kettle” mean?

A friend of mine responded to something I said on a myspace message the other day by saying, “Alright Mr. Pot. I’ll just go over here and hang out in my kettliness for awhile.”

I had no idea what that meant, but I looked up the words, and found the “Mr. Pot?” saying everywhere on the internet, but I have no idea what it means.

What does it mean, and what might my friend have meant?

The expression comes from the saying “That is the Kettle calling the Pot black.” meaning that the person saying something about someone else does the same thing. So Mr Pot, Meet Mrs. Kettle is saying, what ever you are saying someone else is doing you also do it.

Hmmm…my first thought is the saying “that’s like the pot calling the kettle black”.

Did you say something to him that was maybe a bit hypocritical — in other words, did you accuse him of something that you always do, or something like that?

Because when someone says that it is like the pot calling the kettle black, it means basically being hypocritical.

For example: a smoker says to his smoking buddy “dude, your breath stinks” or a really overweight person calls someone else fat. Things like that. These may not be perfect examples, but they are all I could think up on such short notice! πŸ˜‰

Hope this makes sense to you and answers what you wonder about.

He’s referencing an old proverb, “that’s the pot calling the kettle black.”

It means, “Well, he’s being a hypocrite.”

Hope that’s helpful. πŸ˜€
